I am August, a social studies teacher from the Pacific Northwest. Welcome to my website!
About Me
I grew up in Olympia, Washington, and received degrees from Western Washington University (BA, 2019) and St. Martin's University (MIT, 2021). I currently live in Portland, where I work as a substitute teacher. When not educating the next generation, I run, read, learn, and explore the beautiful PNW with my partner Brooke and our puppy Mishka.

My Teaching Philosophy
I went into teaching because I believe high-quality public education is vital for a democratic society. I take inspiration from the American tradition which sees schools as "the republican line of fortifications." (Horace Mann)I thus orient my pedagogy to further three complementary objectives:
Preparing students for a successful life and career
Curating the individual emotionally, socially, and intellectually
Training the citizen
To achieve these ends, I provide a space where students are exposed to a variety of perspectives from both myself and their peers before arriving at reasoned conclusions. Students should leave my class able to approach a wide variety of situations with the core knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to participate and thrive in a democratic society.
